When teaching art to students, it becomes much more engaging when we go beyond simple drawing and explore a theme that helps them understand themselves. This lesson focuses on learning a student’s zodiac constellation and expressing it visually through art.
Through this project, students reflect on their identity while creating a glowing artwork using light and design.
Materials
- Canvas (about the size of a letter paper, adjustable depending on class)
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brushes
- Small fairy lights (string lights)
- Glue gun or strong adhesive
- Awl or sharp tool
- White marker
Steps
- Paint the entire canvas black using acrylic paint.
→ Let it dry completely.

- While drying, draw the student’s constellation on letter-sized paper.
- Place the constellation drawing on top of the canvas.
- Use an awl to poke holes on the star points through the canvas.

- Insert fairy lights from the back of the canvas.
- Secure the wires with masking tape on the back as needed.
- Glue the light switch onto the back frame of the canvas.
- Turn on the lights.
- Write the constellation name on the front using a white marker.
Finished!
This project is not just an art activity, but a combination of
light, science, self-discovery, and design thinking.
